Teaching

piano-fingers

Work hard, stay focused, but always with levity.

I have taught everyone – young, old, beginning, advanced, rich, poor, learning disabled, prodigies, focused and unfocused. Cultivating one-on-one relationships while navigating your threshold for work is my strength. I am good at seeing what interests you and what doesn’t. My role is to supply tools, inspire, and then send you on your way so that your practice at home is frequent and productive.  My methodology emphasizes listening and musicality in order to cultivate expressive playing and enjoyment. I use lots of different books (Suzuki, Faber, Alfreds, Bastien, Schaum etc.) but I don’t subscribe to any one of them and always supplement with my own materials that I have developed over the years. While based in classical music, I encourage you to explore other genres to round out your training and increase versatility. I use composition to teach basic theory so you learn to improvise and hear music of your own.

I believe it’s never too late to start. One of my favorite students began to study in her early 70s and now plays Chopin and Beethoven. I expect you to work, but I promise to be supportive and kind. I want you to enjoy lessons, be excited to practice and play without fear of judgment. “Tough-love!” one of my students said.
